Who Are We?

We are an Education based Dramatherapy and Counselling Service providing schools, colleges and organisations in the North West of the UK individual and small group sessions for pupils with a wide range of issues and needs.

Our team includes experienced dramatherapists and counsellors who work with children and young people of all ages.

Have you considering offering some of the more vulnerable pupils in your school a confidential and supportive space in the form of dramatherapy or counselling?

Following the Department of Health’s "Future in Mind" report in 2015, school counselling is now found in over 62% of schools. As a result, the Department of Education released a school counselling blueprint in 2016 setting out;

“ the Government’s expectation that over time we would expect to see all schools providing access to counselling services ”.

Some common areas of our work in schools include;

  • building self esteem & confidence
  • emotional issues e.g bereavement, abuse etc
  • building resilience
  • transitions e.g new school, key stage, LAC and fostered/adopted children
  • worry and anxiety related issues
  • behavioural issues
  • attachment related issues
  • social & communication difficulties including ASD
  • mental health issues e.g depression, panic disorder, self harm, eating disorders etc

Our team also deliver staff training, PSCHE based student workshops and offer supervision to educational and support staff in schools.

What's the Story?

The Leap Frog Kids Therapy Service was founded in 2013 by Emma Dawes, who is a qualified and experienced dramatherapist. Whilst working in London and Surrey schools and organisations as a dramatherapist, she began to notice an onset of more acute health issues in schools. This meant that of the young people referred to her, some students with less acute issues such as confidence were not seen. So she began running children's confidence building therapeutic workshops during the school holidays, in order for more children with social anxiety, self esteem and confidence issues to have access a therapeutic space.

Over time The Leap Frog Kids Therapy Service has evolved into a team of therapists which make up the current Dramatherapy in Education Service that we are today. However, the overarching aim has always remained the same - to offer space to grow each child and young person's confidence and self esteem, regardless of the presenting issues that may also be supported within the work. The team believe strongly in the importance of building resilience in all children and adolescents so that they can cope with any new challenges that life may bring.

Having grown up herself in the North West of the UK, Emma now lives in Manchester where she is employed as a dramatherapist and counsellor in schools and colleges, and is happy to announce that The Leap Frog Kids Therapy Service is now available across the North West of the UK. The North West team offers schools within the area short and long term dramatherapy and counselling services on both an individual and group basis.

We also still run holiday workshops for children and young people between the ages of 3-16 years. These generally take place in schools in the Manchester area.
